Case Overview

Roxy, an 11-year-old Golden Retriever, was rushed to our clinic in a critical state. Her abdomen had become severely bloated, and she was in visible distress. This condition, known medically as GDV (Gastric Dilation Volvulus) and more commonly as stomach bloat, is one of the most serious emergencies in dogs. Without immediate surgical intervention, GDV can quickly become fatal.

Diagnosis & Decision

Upon arrival, Roxy’s condition was carefully assessed and confirmed as GDV. This meant her stomach was not only distended with gas and fluid but also twisted, cutting off normal circulation and trapping its contents. Emergency surgery was the only option to save her life, and our veterinary team acted without delay.

The Procedure

Roxy was stabilized with an intravenous catheter, placed under anesthesia, and fitted with an endotracheal tube for safe gas anesthesia. A stomach tube was inserted to relieve the enormous pressure, evacuating a large volume of green fluid and food particles.

The surgical team then opened the abdomen, inspected and corrected the stomach’s position, and performed a gastropexy. This procedure permanently attaches the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent future twisting. Finally, the abdominal cavity was thoroughly washed and carefully closed.

The Road to Recovery

The surgery was a success. Almost immediately, Roxy’s vital signs stabilized, and her breathing and comfort improved. She recovered smoothly from anesthesia and, within hours, showed promising signs of strength and relief.
