Case Overview
Maicon, a sweet and gentle cat, had been showing signs of discomfort in his left eye: excessive tearing, squinting, and subtle changes that hinted towards something more serious. Upon closer examination, Dr. Salome found that the lower eyelid was rolling inward, a condition known as entropion, which was irritating the cornea with every blink.
Diagnosis & Decision
Upon Maicon’s arrival, a thorough ophthalmic examination confirmed entropion of the left lower eyelid, causing corneal irritation and epiphora (excessive tearing). Because entropion doesn’t resolve on its own and can lead to ulcers or vision loss, surgical correction was immediately recommended to restore normal eyelid position and protect the eye.
The Procedure
Maicon underwent corrective surgery using the modified Celsus-Hotz technique under general anesthesia. Redundant skin was carefully removed parallel to the eyelid margin, allowing the lid to evert outward and return to its normal position. This procedure effectively stopped the eyelashes and skin from rubbing against the cornea.
The Road to Recovery
Initial healing occurred within 10-14 days. By the two-week mark, the sutures were removed, and Maicon’s left eye was no longer irritated or watery. His comfort improved dramatically, and his gentle personality began to shine again.
