Pet Cardiology
By Dr. Mafalda Sardinha
Heart disease is more common in cats and dogs than many owners realise, and in cats especially, it's often silent until symptoms are already severe.
In this video, Dr. Mafalda Sardinha explains why heart screening matters, even for pets that seem perfectly healthy.
Key Takeaways from Dr. Mafalda:
- In Dogs: Often first detected as a heart murmur during a routine exam.
- In Cats: Frequently silent until severe symptoms appear.
- Stress Matters: Anxiety, heat, and anaesthesia can all worsen cardiac problems.
- Why It Matters: A heart scan helps guide medication and adjust anaesthesia protocols safely.

Hi, I'm Dr. Mafalda, and today I want to speak about the importance of the heart scan examination. Heart disease is actually very common in cats and dogs. In dogs , we frequently hear a heart murmur detected during a regular physical examination. In cats, however, heart disease is very silent and only noticeable when severe symptoms arise . Cardiac problems are especially concerning when the patient is under stress, anxiety, higher temperatures, or anesthesia. Therefore, the heart scan will allow us to conduct a proper evaluation of the heart so we can assess the need for medication to delay the disease and also adjust the anesthetic protocols for procedures.
