Hi, I'm Dr. Nard. PCR for pets. If your pet seems unwell, but the tests keep coming back normal, that's where a PCR test can help. PCR is short for polymerase chain reaction. It's a test that detects the genetic material of bacteria, viruses, and other infectious organisms , making this one of the most accurate ways to identify hidden infections. Your vet may recommend a PCR test if your pet has ongoing diarrhea, coughing, nasal discharge, fever, unexplained weight loss, or if you're preparing for travel. If your pet isn't acting like themselves, speak to your vet - that is us - about whether a PCR test is the right next step.
