Cat Breathing With Mouth Open: Why It Is an Emergency and What to Do

Your cat is sitting very still, neck stretched out, mouth open and belly heaving. Cats don't pant like dogs, so it is easy to feel something is badly wrong, and that instinct is right.
A cat breathing with its mouth open is struggling to get enough oxygen. This is an emergency, so please act straight away rather than waiting to see if it settles.
If this is happening now, call us on +971 56 188 6476. Our Dubai Investment Park hospital has a vet on call 24/7, and all our branches are equipped to handle emergencies. Call before you travel so the team can prepare. You can also read about our emergency care.
What open-mouth breathing looks like
Cats normally breathe through their noses, so an open mouth clearly shows effort. It often comes with other changes that show how hard your cat is working.
Look for fast or noisy breathing, a belly that heaves with each breath, and a stretched-out, low neck. Some cats sit hunched with their elbows out, drool, or cough and wheeze.
Check the gums if your cat allows it. Blue, grey or white gums mean not enough oxygen is reaching the body, and your cat needs help now.
Can it ever be normal?
A cat may pant briefly after hard play, a stressful car journey or a very hot spell. This should settle within a minute once they cool down and relax.
If open-mouth breathing continues, returns, or comes with any of the signs above, treat it as an emergency. Cats cool themselves by finding shade and grooming, so panting is never a normal way to cool down.
Why cats breathe with their mouths open
Several conditions can make breathing hard, and your vet can determine which one is causing it.
Asthma: inflamed, narrowed airways make each breath an effort. Read more in our cat asthma guide.
Heart problems: these can let fluid build up in or around the lungs. Our guide on heart attacks in cats explains the signs.
Respiratory infections: a blocked nose can push a cat to breathe through its mouth.
Something blocking the airway: a foreign object or a throat growth.
Severe allergic reactions: these can cause dangerous swelling.
A cough that keeps coming back can be an early clue to some of these, so see our cat cough guide if your cat has been coughing for a while.
What to do on the way to the vet
Call us first. Tell us what you see, your cat’s age, and any known asthma or heart condition. We will tell you what to do next and get the team ready.
Keep your cat as calm as possible, because stress makes breathing harder. Move slowly, speak softly, and handle them only as much as you need to lift them into a carrier.
Use a carrier with good airflow, and avoid covering it completely. In Dubai heat, cool the car with the air conditioning before you load your cat, and keep the vents from blowing straight on them.
If you can see something in the mouth and it is easy to remove safely, take it out. Otherwise, leave the mouth alone. If your cat stops breathing or collapses, go straight to us and tell the team on the phone.
Leave treatment to us. Giving food, water, medication, or home remedies can delay care, and some can make things worse.
What happens at the clinic
Your cat is our first priority, so the team usually starts with oxygen and a calm, quiet space before any handling. Struggling can worsen breathing, so we examine your cat gently and in stages.
Once your cat is more stable, tests such as X-rays or an ultrasound help us find the cause, and we start treatment. Many cats stay in hospital while their breathing settles, and our ICU and hospitalisation team looks after them. We call you with updates and before any major step.

If your cat already has asthma or heart disease
Cats with a known breathing or heart condition can still have a crisis. A change in their usual breathing, an open mouth or a missed medication means a call to us, even if it eases.
Keep your cat’s treatment plan and medication list somewhere easy to find, so you can quickly share details with the team.
