Cat microchipping is a requirement in Dubai and for travel. It’s a permanent form of identification that proves ownership.
It contains a 15-digit number that links your contact information from the pet registry.
Cats can be microchipped as early as 8 weeks of age, and the chip lasts the entire lifetime.
A cat microchip is a device that’s about as small as a grain of rice. It serves as a reliable form of identification for pets. When your best friend gets lost, microchips are an impactful solution for reunions.
But what exactly are cat microchips?
They’re essentially a scannable chip implanted at the back of the neck, between your cat’s shoulder blades. When vet clinics, authorities, or shelters find your cat, they can easily scan this area to access a unique 15-digit identification number.
This number houses your contact information and your pet’s details within the pet registry or database.
How Much Does It Cost to Microchip My Cat?
Our veterinarians offer microchipping for 267.50 AED. This includes preparations, chip implantation, monitoring, and registration within the Dubai Municipality. After the initial cost, your cat’s microchip won’t need any further maintenance or additional expense.

What Are the Benefits of Cat Microchipping?
The most impactful benefit is the higher chance of being reunited if your cat ever gets lost. While collars are good options to hold contact info, they can easily break and fall off. Cat microchips are permanent and can’t be damaged by external forces.
If ever your cat gets stolen, the registered microchip provides indisputable proof of ownership. This means thieves can’t easily sell off your pet. Additionally, if your cat is injured and taken to a clinic, then vets can easily scan and retrieve your contact details.
Lastly, microchips are required by local regulations and for international travel.
When Should I Have My Cat Microchipped?
Dr. Soheyl recommends cats get microchipped as early as 8 weeks of age. This is a safe age to start at. Make sure they are given the pet chip before being allowed to roam outdoors for the first time.
Many owners also opt to have their cat microchipped during the kitten’s first or second round of vaccinations. It’s also often done while the cat is sleeping during a spaying or neutering procedure.
How Long Does a Cat Microchip Last?
They’re designed to last a lifetime, about 25 years or more. Because the device has no battery or moving parts, it doesn’t degrade or require any further maintenance. The only details you have to update are your contact information.

How Does the Microchipping Process Work?
Before we implant the chip, our vets will scan your cat to ensure they don’t already have one. We’ll also scan the chip beforehand to verify its unique identification number.
To implant the microchip, we gently tent the skin over your cat’s scruff and use a specialized syringe. The process is quick and easy. Once the chip has been inserted, we’ll scan your pet over the shoulder blades to ensure the scanner can read it.
After a quick monitoring session, we’ll proceed to help you register your pet with the Dubai Municipality. Here are the requirements you will need:
Your name, contact details, and home address
A copy of your Emirates ID
A copy of your UAE residence visa and passport
A copy of your tenancy contract or title deed
An updated record of your cat’s vaccinations
The microchip number
Clear photos of your cat
Your cat’s details (age, breed, sex, and color)
Once approved, you’ll be given a Dubai Municipality pet tag. Your cat must wear this collar at all times.
Do Cat Microchips Have Risks or Side Effects?
Some cats may experience brief, mild discomfort during the injection. In some cases, others may experience minor swelling and redness at the injection site. There’s a rare chance of an infection occurring due to the puncture of the skin.
Additionally, the chip may slowly shift from the initial site to different parts of the body. However, this is extremely rare and doesn’t hurt the cat.
If you notice any severe, persistent, or concerning signs, contact our vets right away.
