Breed History
The Norwegian Forest Cat has its roots deep in Norse history and mythology. From being alongside Vikings to assisting the goddess Freya, these cats are a part of Norway and its rich history.
In the 20th century, Wegies faced a sharp decline in numbers due to crossbreeding practices with other cats. Fortunately, the people of Norway deemed the cat a national treasure. As a result, King Olav V made the cat the national cat of Norway, helping people save the breed.
Today, the Norwegian Forest Cat continues to become a part of families in Norway and around the world.

Norwegian Forest Cat Grooming Guide
Coat Maintenance
A wire-bristle brush or a metal comb is a good option for brushing their coat. Brush them twice a week, which can be more during shedding seasons.
Skin Health
Their dense coat can trap in moisture, dirt, and debris, which can cause skin allergies and issues. Use gentle shampoos and moisturizers to keep the skin healthy.
Bathing
Norwegian Forest cats do not need frequent baths. They only needed one every few months. If they get dirty, it’s a signal to have them bathed. Use gentle shampoos and dry them thoroughly.
Nail Trimming
Trim their nails every 2 to 3 weeks, or if the nails get too long. Use sharp nail clippers meant for cats.
Ear Care
Weekly ear checks are recommended, and ear cleaning can be done as needed. Use a pet-safe ear cleaning solution and use a cotton ball to wipe away the debris.
Eye Care
These cats need to have their eyes cleaned and checked daily. Use a soft, damp cloth and wipe outward.
Teeth Care
Ideally, these cats need to have their teeth brushed daily. Use a cat-safe toothpaste and toothbrush.
