Breed History

Tibetan Mastiffs are an ancient breed originating from Tibet, prized by people in East Asia. These dogs were bred to safeguard the monasteries of Tibet and were often regarded as vessels for the souls of monks who did not make it to their heavenly paradise, Shambhala.

These dogs impressed a lot of people because of their strong-willed and protective nature. Tibetan Mastiffs became the standard for many working dogs and were often used to guard sheep and other livestock. Their balance of power and control made them reliable guardians, as they did not chase, only shooed away.

These dogs were gradually made known to the world. From the mountains, their popularity grew. Today, these dogs are still being used as guard dogs, companions, and members of loving families.

Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer common in large dog breeds, like the Tibetan Mastiff. The cancer originates in the bone cells, causing symptoms like swelling, pain, reduced appetite, and lethargy. This is mostly caused by genetics. (osteosarcoma in dogs)

Hemangiosarcoma

An aggressive cancer that develops in the blood vessels. This can affect the heart, liver, and spleen of dogs, which is generally caused by genetics. Large dogs like the Tibetan Mastiff are common victims, experiencing symptoms like abdominal swelling, weight loss, and pale gums. (Kim et al., 2015)

Lymphoma

These are cancers of the lymphatic system, also affecting the spleen, gastrointestinal tract, and liver. Lymphomas lead to symptoms like swollen lymph nodes, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Affected dogs have been observed to display genetic and environmental factors as potential causes. (Zandvliet, 2016)

Tibetan Mastiff Grooming Guide

Coat Maintenance

The Tibetan Mastiff has a dense coat that will need weekly brushing. Use a slicker brush to remove loose hair and focus on the mane.

Skin Health

They can be prone to skin allergies and issues. Check the skin weekly and be sure to use gentle shampoos and moisturizers to soothe the skin.

Bathing

Bathing can be done every 6 to 8 weeks, or if they get noticeably dirty. Use gentle shampoos and dry out their thick coat completely.

Nail Trimming

Their nails should be trimmed every month or as needed. Use sharp clippers meant for dogs.

Ear Care

Ear cleaning can be done every 3 to 4 weeks. Check their ears every week to watch out for any visible dirt, debris, or issues.

Eye Care

Tibetan Mastiffs should have their eyes cleaned twice a week, or if there is noticeable discharge. Use a soft, damp cloth and wipe outward.

Teeth Care

Daily dental brushing is recommended for Tibetan Mastiffs, but brushing twice or thrice a week is also enough. Use a toothpaste and a toothbrush for dogs.
