Breed History

The Chartreux cat traces back to the 15th century. It was first described in a poem by Joachim du Bellay that talks about a cat named Belaud. They were initially valued for their ability to hunt and catch rats.

These cats were also associated with the Carthusian monks, accompanying them with their soft and gentle presence. Some even tried to hold a “praying position.”

Today, the Chartreux is a national treasure in France. From its prevalence in literature to its loving presence in families, this cat breed continues to be a popular companion.

Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a cancer that affects lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that is important for the cat’s immune system. Affected Chartreux cats can experience swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, lethargy, and loss of appetite. (Versteegh et al., 2023)

Mammary Tumors

These are abnormal growths in the mammary glands, often accompanied by symptoms such as firm lumps, skin ulcers, or discharge. Mammary tumors are often triggered by hormonal imbalances in cats. (Giménez et al., 2010)

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

A type of skin cancer in cats that mostly affects areas with light fur. SCC is usually triggered by exposure to UV light. Common signs include non-healing sores, swelling, and crustiness. (Murphy, 2013)

Coat Maintenance

Brushing should be done once a week using a metal comb or soft-bristle brush. This helps prevent loose hair and matting.

Skin Health

To protect their skin, regular brushing helps remove allergens that might cause allergic reactions and irritation.

Bathing

Bathing is rarely necessary as the Chartreux has a water-resistant coat. They are good groomers, which keeps them clean.

Nail Trimming

These cats need nail trimming every 2 to 3 weeks, or until they get too long. Use cat-specific nail clippers.

Ear Care

Ear care can be done only when necessary. Be sure to watch out for any dirt and debris. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner.

Eye Care

Their eyes should be checked and cleaned weekly. Use a soft, damp cloth and be sure to wipe outward.

Teeth Care

Dental brushing should be done 2 to 3 times a week using a pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrush.

Physical Characteristics
