Breed History
The Chartreux cat traces back to the 15th century. It was first described in a poem by Joachim du Bellay that talks about a cat named Belaud. They were initially valued for their ability to hunt and catch rats.
These cats were also associated with the Carthusian monks, accompanying them with their soft and gentle presence. Some even tried to hold a “praying position.”
Today, the Chartreux is a national treasure in France. From its prevalence in literature to its loving presence in families, this cat breed continues to be a popular companion.
