Breed History

Its origins began in 19th-century England, a time when bulldogs and terriers were bred to create strong dogs for bull-baiting. When these activities were banned in 1835, breeders focused on dog fighting.

When these dogs were brought to the US, they were used as working farm dogs. Pit bulls became an essential part of farms, helping owners herd and guard livestock.

Over time, breeders developed these dogs to hold values such as loyalty and companionship. By doing so, these dogs became a favorite among dog lovers, especially those looking for a friend. Today, these energetic dogs have become one of the best choices for people wanting a trustworthy companion and protector.

Mast Cell Tumors

Pitties are predisposed to having mast cell tumors, which can appear as lumps and sores. These tumors can vary in appearance. Symptoms include raised, irritated masses that may grow or shrink rapidly. The causes are believed to be a mix of genetics and environmental factors. (Martins et al., 2021)

Hemangiosarcoma

Hemangiosarcoma often affects the spleen or heart. Since symptoms may not appear until advanced stages, routine screenings can help with early detection. The primary cause is unknown, but genetics is thought of as one of the determining factors. Symptoms include weakness and collapse. (De Nardi et al., 2023)

Osteosarcoma

Pit Bulls, like any other dog, can be affected by osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer. This cancer generally begins in the limbs, making its way into other parts of the body. Dogs affected by this cancer can experience weakness, loss of appetite, and difficulty with moving. (Szewczyk et al., 2014)

Coat Maintenance

American Pit Bull Terriers have a short and smooth coat that is generally low maintenance. Brushing can be done once or twice a week using a soft-bristle brush.

Skin Health

Pit Bulls have sensitive skin, which can benefit from gentle moisturizers and coconut oil extracts.

Bathing

These dogs need baths once every 1 to 3 months, depending on lifestyle and regular activity. Use a gentle pet shampoo, and be sure to dry them thoroughly.

Nail Trimming

Pit bull nails should be trimmed every 2 to 3 weeks to keep them short and comfortable, or if they get too long.

Ear Care

Pitties need to have their ears cleaned every 1 to 2 weeks. Use a pet-safe cleaning solution and a cotton ball, never a cotton swab.

Eye Care

Like other dogs, Pit Bulls need eye cleaning when necessary. Use a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.

Teeth Care

Pit Bulls need regular dental care done at the clinic and at home. For home dental care, brushing is recommended twice or thrice a week.

Physical Characteristics

Head

Pitties have a broad head with a strong jaw and well-defined cheek muscles. Their powerful bite contributes to their natural chewing instincts.

Eyes

They have round to almond-shaped eyes that can come in various colors, including brown, black, amber, and green.

Ears

Pit bulls have medium-sized ears that can be floppy or semi-pricked. Some owners choose to crop their ears.

Body

Pitties have a muscular body with a deep chest and strong shoulders. Their back is slightly arched, giving them a natural stance of strength and agility.

Limbs

Pitties have strong, well-muscled legs that allow them to run, jump, and pivot quickly. Their paws are compact and sturdy.

Tail

They have a medium-length tail that is thick at the base and tapers to a point. It is carried naturally low but may rise when they are excited.

Coat

Pit bulls have a short, smooth, and glossy coat that is low-maintenance. Colors include black, blue, brindle, and fawn.

Size

Males are about 46-53 cm (18-21 inches) in height, while females are 43-50 cm (17-20 inches) tall.

Weight

Males have a weight of 15-31 kg (35-70 lb), while females weigh 13-27 kg (30-60 lb).
