History of the Corgi
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two breeds, with origins tracing back to 1200 BC in Cardiganshire. Pembroke Welsh Corgis, on the other hand, originated around 1000 AD in Pembrokeshire.
While they share similarities, Cardigans are descended from the German Teckel lineage, which also includes the Dachshund. Pembrokes originated from the Nordic Spitz breeds.
Over time, Corgis have transitioned from farm work to being loyal and loving companions in many households. Their popularity skyrocketed, with notable people such as Queen Elizabeth II having about 30 Corgis in her lifetime.
Physical Characteristics of Corgi
Both types of Corgis have a fox-like head shape with a broad skull. Pembrokes have a more triangular shape. The muzzle is straight and tapers slightly.
Corgis have medium-sized, oval-shaped eyes. Pembrokes can have brown or blue eyes. Cardigans’ eyes can be brown, dark, or blue.
Both breeds have upright ears, but Pembrokes have pointed and smaller ears. Cardigans’ ears are slightly larger and rounder.
While they share a similar body structure, Pembrokes have a more rectangular shape, while Cardigans have a rounder body shape.
Pembrokes have straighter legs, while Cardigans have slightly outward-facing legs. These are slightly heavier.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a short tail that is typically docked, while Cardigan Welsh Corgis have long and bushy tails.
While both have medium-length double coats, Pembrokes have a much coarser coat. Pembrokes come in red, fawn, sable, and black and tan. Cardigans can have black, red, sable, and blue coat colors.
Male and Female Pembrokes: 25.4-30.5 cm (10-12 inches); Male and Female Cardigans: 26.7-31.8 cm (10.5-12.5 inches).
Male Pembrokes: 11.8-13.6 kg (26-30 lbs); Female Pembrokes: 10.9-12.7 kg (24-28 lbs); Male Cardigans: 13.6-17.2 kg (30-38 lbs); Female Cardigans: 11.3-15.4 kg (25-34 lbs).

How to Groom a Corgi
Corgis require brushing twice or three times a week. Use a slicker brush or metal combs. This helps with their shedding.
Since they are prone to skin allergies, use gentle grooming products and avoid overbathing. Regular brushing helps with skin health.
Corgis can be bathed every 2 to 3 months. Use gentle shampoos and vet-approved products. Dry them thoroughly.
Nail trimming can be done every 3 to 4 weeks, or if they get too long. Use pet-specific clippers.
Weekly ear cleaning is recommended to prevent ear infections and issues. Use a vet-approved cleaning solution and cotton balls.
Routine cleaning isn’t necessary, but just keep an eye out for discharge or irritation. When cleaning, use a soft, damp cloth and wipe outward.
Brush their teeth 3 to 4 times a week with a dog-safe toothpaste and toothbrush.
