The Belgian Malinois hails from the city of Mechelen. It’s one of the four Belgian Shepherds, each named based on the place it was bred. These dogs were bred to herd sheep and guard property, making them valuable working dogs for the people. 

Because of their work ethic and stamina, the Mals became popular dogs worldwide. The breed became a choice for militaries, police forces, and protection services. They have also become famous for dog sports and agility games.

Today, the Belgian Malinois continues to be a loyal and hardworking dog.

Belgian Malinois have a long and well-proportioned head. It has a strong jaw with tight lips.

The Belgian Malinois has a strong, elegant, and square-shaped body. It has a deep chest and a level topline.

Its legs are strong and well-muscled. The hind legs are proportionate to the body and are longer than the front legs.

Their tails are often carried high and can curl. These are strong at the base, taper to a point, and are carried low when at rest.

Belgian Malinois have a short, dense coat that is weather-resistant. It’s solid with a dark shading and mask, coming in shades of fawn to mahogany.

What to Expect With a Belgian Malinois

Vocalization Level

Belgian Malinois are moderately vocal and will bark to alert or communicate. They use their barks purposely, especially during work. 

Energy Level

These dogs have high energy levels and stamina. They thrive on physical activity and structured work, which is one of their most famous qualities.

Independence Level

This breed is attention-seeking and bonds intensely with its owner. They don’t do well when left alone for long periods of time.

Affection Level

Belgian Malinois dogs are very affectionate with their owners, showing love through physical closeness. They enjoy being a big part of the family. 

Compatibility with Children

This dog breed loves to spend time with children, although they will require supervision due to their high energy levels and herding instincts.

They can live peacefully with other animals, especially when introduced early. However, they can have the tendency to herd other pets.

Exercise Requirements

Belgian Malinois require short sessions of training, about 30 minutes to an hour. They excel in obedience, agility, and protection work exercises.
