Pug Breed History

Pugs had their origins in China, where they were kept as companions for the rich and wealthy. They were so popular that emperors and aristocrats even enlisted guards to protect their Pugs. Over time, the dog breed’s popularity soared outside of China.

Its fame grew to Japan, Russia, and Europe while still being the favorite for nobility in these places. It was also referenced in several pieces of art and paintings.

Today, the Pug continues to be a trustworthy companion. Its affectionate and playful nature makes it a favorite among families and dog lovers.

How to Groom a Pug

Coat Maintenance

Pugs have a short and dense coat that sheds more than most first-time pet owners expect. Brushing them at least twice a week helps manage loose fur and reduces the amount left around the house. A rubber curry brush or grooming mitt works well for Pug fur. During seasonal changes, they may need more frequent brushing.

Skin Health

These dogs are prone to skin sensitivities, especially in the folds of their face. Dirt and moisture can get trapped in the wrinkles, which can lead to irritation or infection. It’s important to gently clean between their facial folds a few times a week with a soft cloth or vet-approved wipes and keep the area dry.

Bathing Routine

Pugs don’t need frequent baths. Once every three to four weeks is enough, unless they become dirty from playing outdoors. Use a gentle hypoallergenic dog shampoo that doesn’t strip natural skin oils. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry them completely, especially in between the skin folds.

Nail Trimming

Nail trimming is needed for Pugs every two to three weeks. Their nails can grow quickly and may cause discomfort or affect their gait if left too long. Use a dog nail clipper or grinder, and take care not to cut the pink and sensitive part of the nail.

Ear Cleaning

Pugs have folded ears that can also trap moisture and dirt, similar to their facial wrinkles. This makes them prone to ear infections. It’s important to check and clean their ears weekly by gently using a dog ear cleaner and cotton pads. Avoid pushing a cotton swab into the inner ear.

Eye Care

Because of their prominent eyes, Pugs are more likely to have debris or discharge around them. Wipe around their eyes every day with a damp cloth or pet eye wipes to keep them clean. Always check for signs of irritation, cloudiness, or excessive tearing. Once you see any symptoms, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is important for Pugs because they’re prone to gum disease. Brush their teeth several times a week and provide dental chews. Starting oral care early will make it easier to maintain as they age.
