RECOVERY

Warm and watched

A nurse monitoring until they wake

The part people actually worry about

Almost nobody hesitates over the surgery itself. It's the anaesthetic. Here's exactly how we handle it.

One

We check before we start

A full physical exam and pre-anaesthetic blood tests where age or health history warrant them. If anything looks off, we postpone. Nothing goes ahead on assumption.

Two

Someone watches the whole time

A dedicated nurse monitors heart rate, oxygen, blood pressure, and temperature throughout, so their only job is your dog while the vet operates.

Three

A calm, monitored wake-up

Your dog recovers on a heated bed with a nurse close by until fully alert. As soon as they're awake and stable, we call you.

What the day looks like

Drop off in the morning. Neuters go home the same afternoon; spays stay with us overnight.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Fasting

No food after 10 PM, water is fine. We'll send fasting instructions specific to your dog's age and size ahead of the visit.

MORNING

Admission

A final health check with the vet who'll be operating, and a chance to ask anything before you sign consent, once costs are confirmed.

MIDDAY

The procedure

Neutering is quicker than spaying, and larger dogs take a little longer than smaller ones. We call you as soon as your dog is awake.

AFTERNOON

Home

Neutered males go home the same evening. Spayed females stay with us overnight for monitoring and go home the next day. Either way, you'll leave with aftercare instructions and a post-op check already booked.

What we're actually protecting against

Spaying and neutering do more than prevent litters; here's what each one protects your dog from.

Spaying

For female dogs

Removes the ovaries and uterus, which rules out pyometra and uterine infections, and lowers the risk of mammary tumours, especially when done before her first heat.

Neutering

For male dogs

Removes the testicles, which rules out testicular cancer and lowers the risk of prostate issues later on. It also tends to reduce marking, roaming, and mounting.

Community

A calmer dog at home

Many owners notice less hormone-driven aggression and roaming after their dog has recovered, alongside the health benefits above.

What it costs

Priced by weight and sex. This is what you pay, confirmed in writing before we begin.

Pricing covers the initial checkup, use of our sterile surgical space, the operation itself, and post-operative care. If your dog is pregnant, in season, overweight, or has an existing condition, we'll walk you through any difference in price before the day, never on it.

Recovery, at home

Some mild discomfort is normal, and usually settles within 24 to 48 hours

Full recovery generally takes 7 to 10 days

Keep activity restricted, lead walks only, no running or jumping

A cone keeps them from licking or chewing the incision, if needed

Post-op check with us included, so we can confirm healing is on track

Call us any time if something looks wrong. We'd rather you did

Timing by breed and size

Small breeds mature earlier and are usually done around 6 months. Large and giant breeds are often better waiting until 11 to 15 months, so their joints have time to develop fully first. We'll confirm the right timing for your specific dog.

Everything You Need to Know

Questions? We're here to help

Is the anaesthetic safe?

For a healthy dog, the risk is very low. We reduce it further with a pre-surgical exam, blood tests where indicated, a dedicated nurse monitoring vital signs throughout, and a warm, supervised recovery. If we have any concern about your dog's fitness for anaesthesia, we'll say so and postpone.

What's the difference between spaying and neutering?

Neutering is the general term. For female dogs, it's spaying, removing the ovaries and uterus. For male dogs, it's castration, removing the testicles. Both prevent reproduction and carry health benefits.

Should indoor-only dogs still be done?

Yes. Indoor dogs benefit just as much, it prevents reproductive disease and removes hormone-driven behaviours regardless of whether they spend time outdoors.

Will my dog's personality change?

No. What tends to reduce are hormone-driven behaviours: roaming, marking, mounting, and some forms of aggression. Owners often describe their dog as calmer afterwards. Who they are doesn't change.

Will my dog gain weight afterwards?

It's a real possibility, not a myth. Removing the sex hormones slows their metabolism and can increase appetite, so some dogs need slightly less food and more exercise than before. It's manageable with small adjustments, and we're happy to talk it through at their check-up.

Is my dog too old to be spayed or neutered?

There's no strict upper limit. Older dogs are routinely and safely neutered; we simply take more care over the pre-anaesthetic workup. If your dog is a senior, bring them in, and we'll assess honestly.

What should I watch for during recovery?

Some swelling or mild bruising at the site is normal. Contact us if you notice ongoing bleeding, your dog seems unusually lethargic, or they won't leave the area alone despite the cone, we'd rather check than have you wait it out.
