History of the Kangal
The Kangal is an ancient breed originating from the Sivas region of Turkey. These mighty dogs have been used for centuries to protect livestock and farm animals from predators like wolves and bears. Because of its strength, endurance, and protective nature, the Kangal has created a significant impact within the community.
Over time, the dog’s reputation grew and spread beyond Turkey. It was these attributes that made the Kangal Shepherd Dog a popular breed, making its way to other countries. On these lands, they still serve the same purpose: protecting livestock, children, and homes from other dangers.
Today, these dogs continue to accompany humans in day-to-day tasks, protecting them at every turn.

What to Expect With a Kangal
Vocalization Level
Kangals are typically quiet dogs that do not bark without a good reason. They may bark to alert or protect, but are otherwise calm and silent.
Energy Level
These dogs are energetic and require regular physical activity. They require consistent exercise to redirect their high energy levels.
Independence Level
Kangal Shepherd Dogs are generally independent creatures who can survive without a lot of human interaction.
Affection Level
They are generally affectionate to their owners and families. While they aren’t overly clingy, they love spending time with their human companions.
Compatibility with Children
These dogs are good with kids, especially when introduced early. Constant supervision is recommended because of their size.

Adaptability Level
They can adapt reasonably well to new situations, homes, and environments with the right help.

They don’t require frequent grooming, as they only need brushing just once or twice a week. Bathing can be done when they get dirty and smelly.
Health Concerns of Kangal
How to Groom a Kangal
The Kangal's short double coat should be brushed once or twice a week to remove dirt and loose fur.
Use moisturizers, oatmeal creams, and coconut oil products to help keep their skin healthy. Make sure these are safe for their skin before applying.
Since they don't need frequent baths, just bathe them when they get noticeably dirty. Use a pet-safe shampoo and dry them thoroughly.
Nail trimming should be done every 2 to 3 weeks or until the nails become considerably long.
Kangals don’t need regular ear cleaning. Just clean their ears when there is a noticeable wax buildup, odor, or discharge.
Their eyes require weekly or bi-weekly cleaning. Use a soft, damp cloth and gently wipe outward.
It’s recommended to brush a Kangal’s teeth twice or thrice a week. Use a pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrush.
