Why should I vaccinate my cat?

Vaccinating your cat is essential for preventing serious, often fatal illnesses. Whether your cat lives strictly indoors, enjoys time outdoors, or travels with you, they can still be exposed to infectious diseases through other pets, shared environments, or even on your clothing and shoes.

Vaccines protect against highly contagious viruses, such as rabies, feline panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper), feline calicivirus, and feline herpesvirus. These diseases spread quickly, especially in multi-pet households or catteries, and can be difficult and costly to treat. Some, like rabies, are zoonotic and required by law.

Staying up to date with vaccinations not only protects your cat’s long-term health, but it also supports public safety, lowers future veterinary costs, and ensures smooth travel or boarding access.

What essential vaccinations does my cat need?

Rabies

Reduces the risk of rabies infection, a fatal illness transmitted through bites, scratches, or contact with rabid animals’ saliva.

Calicivirus

Provides vital defense against respiratory problems in cats, which can lead to symptoms such as fevers and trouble breathing.

Rhinotracheitis

Shields cats against the feline herpesvirus that affects their respiratory tract, which may cause long-term health issues.

Panleukopenia

Prevents a highly contagious viral infection that attacks a cat’s gastrointestinal and immune systems, as well as the bone marrow.

FVRCP

Protects against three serious conditions: rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia, all of which can cause health complications.

Are there optional vaccines my cat might need?

Bordetella

Blocks bacteria from infecting your cat and causing respiratory issues, which can be fatal, especially for kittens.

FIV

Keeps cats safe from FIV, which weakens the immune system and is transmitted through bite wounds.

Feline Leukemia (FeLV)

Recommended for cats that go outdoors or live in multi-cat households. FeLV can suppress the immune system and is easily spread between cats through grooming, sharing bowls, or bites.

Chlamydophila felis

An optional vaccine to protect against conjunctivitis and respiratory symptoms, especially in high-density cat environments or catteries.

When should my cat have their vaccinations?

Kittens should start vaccinations around 6 to 8 weeks of age, followed by two or three boosters spaced 3-4 weeks apart until they're about 16 weeks old. This early protection is crucial before they interact with other pets or explore outdoors.

Adult cats require regular annual boosters to maintain a strong immune system. While some vaccines, such as rabies, may offer protection for up to three years, many boarding or travel regulations still require annual updates. If your cat has missed a dose, our vets can assess and safely restart their vaccination schedule.
