What is microchipping for cats?
A cat microchip provides reliable identification for your pet throughout their lifetime. These chips are implanted just beneath the skin in the area where loose skin sits between the shoulder blades.
This tiny device can be scanned to obtain a unique 15-digit identification number compliant with ISO standards (11784/11785). The 15-digit number is linked to your contact information and your pet’s details in the Dubai Municipality database.
This way, authorities, shelters, and vet clinics may obtain your contact details when your cat is scanned.
The chip is permanent and cannot be lost or tampered with, making it highly reliable compared to physical collars and tags that can be easily damaged.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, microchipped cats are 20 times more likely to be found and reunited than those without.
Having your cat microchipped means abiding by pet ownership laws in the UAE and avoiding fines, service denial, and pet confiscation.
Most countries require microchips for cats traveling in and out of their borders, including the UAE. This is part of vet health certificates and import/export.
A microchip serves as a valid proof of ownership. This makes it much harder for thieves to sell or transfer stolen cats without getting caught.
When is this needed?
Cats can be microchipped at any age, as the procedure is safe for kittens, adults, and seniors. We recommend scheduling an appointment along with your cat’s first vaccination series when they are around 6-8 weeks old.
You may also have your cat spayed or neutered, as we can implant the microchip while they’re under sedation from the surgery.

Requirements for cat registration
Before the registration process, we recommend gathering the essential documents and information. This will make the process smoother once at the clinic.

An original and scanned copy of your Emirates ID
Your UAE residence visa and passport
Proof of residence
Your cat’s updated vaccination record
The microchip number
Clear photos of your cat
Your cat’s characteristics (age, breed, sex, and color)
How much does it cost?
Our microchipping services are priced at 267.50 AED. This includes preparations, chip implantation, monitoring, and registration with the Dubai Municipality. After the initial cost, your cat’s microchip won’t need any further maintenance or additional expense.
You will receive your cat’s official Dubai Municipality collar and tag on the same day if you apply in person. This must be worn by them at all times as required by local regulations.
How long does a cat microchip last?
They’re designed to last a lifetime, about 25 years or more. Because the device has no battery or moving parts, it doesn’t degrade. The only details you have to update are your contact information.
Are there risks or side effects?
The procedure is safe and highly recommended. Cats may feel a momentary pinch during implantation, similar to that of a vaccine.
In some cases, cats may feel temporary soreness or a small bump at the injection site. A minor infection can also occur, but this is very rare.
Another rare side effect is chip migration, which happens when the chip shifts from the shoulder blades to the neck or chest. This is harmless and doesn’t cause any pain to the cat.
Why do cats need microchips for travel?
For pets traveling in and out of Dubai, a microchip is a valid ID that is required for border entry. Microchips allow authorities and officials to confirm your cat’s identity and check their travel requirements.
The chip number must match perfectly on your cat’s travel documents, including health certificate, import permits, vaccination records, and pet passport.
If there are any discrepancies in your cat’s identification or records, mandatory quarantine is required until the documentation is resolved. Cats that travel without a microchip will be denied entry, placed in mandatory quarantine, or returned to their point of origin.
These measures are in place to protect public safety and to confirm pet ownership.
