What is a microchip for dogs?

A dog microchip is a small electronic chip placed under the dog's skin by licensed veterinarians. It's usually about the size of a grain of rice.

When scanned, the chip displays a unique identification number that can be linked to the pet registry or central database to retrieve the owner's contact details and information. This ID number is 15 digits long and complies with global ISO standards (ISO 11784/11785).

The microchip doesn't contain any personal data, only the unique 15-digit number. This links to the database information managed by the Dubai Municipality, which stores:

  • Your name, address, email, phone number, and Emirates ID number

  • Your pet's name, breed, age, and physical characteristics

  • Your pet's medical history, including vaccination history

Why you should microchip your dog

Why you should microchip your dog

Microchipped dogs are three times more likely to be reunited with their owners than pets without one. We've seen the relief and joy of reunions firsthand, all because of a tiny chip.

Extra Safety Net

Extra Safety Net

Aside from collars and ID tags, which can break, a dog microchip provides extra security.

Why is pet registration required in Dubai?

Registering dogs with the Dubai Municipality is mandatory to ensure public safety, control outbreaks, and promote responsible pet ownership. It helps the city maintain accurate pet population counts and holds owners accountable for potential animal abandonment.

How much do microchips cost?

We offer our microchipping services for 267.50 AED, which includes preparation, chip implantation, and official registration. This is a one-time cost that covers the entire process with no further maintenance or payment required.

Your dog will receive their official municipality collar tag on the same day.

When should I microchip my dog?

Dogs can be microchipped at any age. While they may have collars or tags, these can easily fall off or get damaged. Relying on them is never enough.

Microchips are highly beneficial for dogs who love to go outside and for those who tend to sneak out of the house. The earlier your dog has a dependable ID, the sooner you can keep them safe in a busy city like Dubai.

Does it cause adverse reactions?

Side effects are rare. The microchipping process may cause brief discomfort, but it is quick and well-tolerated. Most dogs will react for only a moment and may return to normal immediately after the procedure.

Some dogs may experience some mild soreness or swelling at the injection site, but these are temporary. Microchips may also potentially cause infections at the injection site. There's also a slim chance for the chip to shift slightly or move away from its original spot, but it will still be functional.

If you notice severe swelling, pain, or redness, contact our vets right away.

Are these required for travel?

Microchips are required for all dogs traveling to and from Dubai. They serve as an official ID for your dog's itinerary, helping you comply with local and international regulations for travel and border entry.

Your dog's microchip number must match exactly on all travel documents, including health certificates, import permits, vaccination records, and the overall pet passport. This helps authorities confirm your pet's identity at every checkpoint of the journey, ensuring safety and compliance.

Is it possible to remove my pet's microchip?

It is possible, but it requires a surgical procedure done under anesthesia. Removing the chip is strongly discouraged due to the risks, but it's often considered if the microchip has caused an infection or moved to a dangerous or painful area.

Is the process painful for my dog?

Implanting the microchip only causes minimal pain, which is usually like a quick pinch. The procedure only takes seconds and requires no anesthesia, with most dogs showing little to no reaction.

Can sick dogs get microchipped?

It’s not advisable to microchip a sick dog right away. While the procedure is quick and safe, it does cause mild discomfort. It’s best to wait until your dog fully recovers.

How long does the chip last?

Implanted microchips are designed to last about 25 years, operating throughout your pet's entire lifetime. These devices have no moving parts, eliminating the need for maintenance. They simply need to be scanned to obtain the unique identification number.

How often do I need to renew my dog’s registration?

You need to renew your dog’s registration in Dubai every year. It is crucial to make sure your contact details are up to date. Updating your info in the database is important after moving or changing numbers.

Where can I update my contact details for the microchip?

Our team can help you update your contact details with the Dubai Municipality or process a change in ownership when adopting a new dog. Just visit the clinic and bring the required documents so we can handle the process through the online portal.
